In a press release on their website, the wonderful people behind the Halifax Pop Explosion have announced a string of great new acts for the annual festival including Owen, Timber Timbre, Crystal Antlers, Bruce Peninsula and many more. These relatively big names add to an already impressive list of acts including Final Fantasy, MSTRKRFT and Japandroids. Fredericton legends 283 are reuniting for a show at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre this Friday for only $7, the show is all ages. The bill also features a few bands making the trek to Fredericton from across Atlantic Canada, Tongan Death Grip from Halifax, The Strawmen from Albert County and Saint John’s Hospital Grade have all been kind enough to show their support for 283. The show starts at 7:00pm.

Post-prog dance rockers The Jimmy Swift Band are appearing live at the Paragon Theatre in Halifax on Friday, September 11th supported by Vancouver’s Jackfruit, but be sure to get there early enough to witness Major/Minor open the show with their 3rd live performance in their native city, you won’t regret it. Advance tickets are $12 and are available online or at any Halifax ticketpro locations, $15 at the door.

“Halifax Pop Explosion is saddened and shocked by the death of Alex Fountain, our Showcase Coordinator, who died unexpectedly on Saturday night. He was 20 years old.
Alex had worked at Halifax Pop Explosion as a summer student for both this and last summer. A long time participant as both a fan and musician in the Halifax all ages scene, Alex was a big man with a good heart.
He was known as a tireless supporter of the local punk and all ages scenes.”
I did not know Alex personally but it is extremely sad to know that some one with so much talent and potential can vanish so suddenly. Rest in peace, Alex.
I’ve always been a big fan of music lists, whether they are top 10 or 50, songs or albums, or decades or years. I’ve thought quite a bit about doing a list for this decade but couldn’t decide on the specifics until now. First, I will be compiling a list of the 10 most outstanding songs of the year, starting with 2000 and ending with this year. Following that, a list of the 50 most outstanding albums of the decade will be published and finally, a list of bands that I think are worth watching going into 2010. Stay tuned.
